Umeox launches USD 100 solar powered smartphone in India

There are frequent power cuts in India; the electricity board is not all that reliable. But the Sun god has been really gracious to shower his blessings a plenty! Now with Umeox Apollo, Indians can refill the juice in their smartphones by simply putting them on the window sill in the sunlight. The China based mobile manufacturer Umeox Mobile has teamed up with Dutch company Intivation to reveal a solar powered Android smartphone at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2011 in Barcelona.

Umeox are known for their unique phones like SIM, triple SIM and even dual screen phones in the past. But this time they’re doing something exceptional. They’ve fixed a solar charging panel on the back of the Umeox Apollo smartphone. The back has a surface area of 24 square cm (minus the camera). The solar charger can charge an empty battery completely in 17 hours of bright sunlight.

The Umeox Apollo is not a high end smartphone; it’s just USD 100 off contract and aimed at the Indian and European markets. It runs on Android 2.2 Froyo and supports micro SD card up to 32GB. It also packs some interesting features such as 3G, GPRS, WCDMA, Bluetooth and USB connectivity and a rear facing camera.

Now at least Indians don’t have to worry about how to charge their battery when the power’s out … unless it the rainy season!
