Beware! Alan Photo (Funan Centre) changes gifts from Canon

I purchased quite a number of camera accessories from Alan Photos in past few years, and always regard it as a reputable shop. However I was wrong when I visited it again on 10th Feb.

I chose a Canon PowerShot S100 as gift for my wife, and was given a Sandisk Class 4 8GB SDHC card and a small black camera case. I even asked the guy if the case would fit, and he said no problem. So I took his words and went home.

On 14th Feb, my wife opened the gift and there's something wrong, the small case didn't fit the camera at all. Obviously, the mood was spoiled. I examined the case carefully, and the plastic bag shows clearly "IX3241xxx", so I assume this is for Ixus series only (this was confirmed by Canon Redemption centre staff when I called them later). The next day, I phoned the shop, and the guy said I can bring the case for exchange.

So today (20th Feb), I went to the shop again. Without checking the black case, he took out two case for me to select, one is a brown leather case with PowerShot wording on it, and another soft case shows PowerShot S95. So I chose the leather one and went back office.

After I reached office, I was wondering if the guy can change the case, will he do the same to the SDHC card? So I called Canon Redemption centre, and was told that the brown leather case is the genuine case given with PowerShot S100, but the SDHC card should be a Lexar Class 6 8GB card, again, the card is changed!! The Canon staff even helped me to verify with his manager and confirmed that all cards issued should be Class 6 or higher, as Class 4 is a bit slow.

So I phoned the shop again but this time the guy denied that the card is also changed. He insisted that only Sandisk Class 4 card were received from Canon and asked me to call Canon again. I'm too tired to find out who's telling lie so I just said "fine, thanks for telling me all these" and hung up.

The price difference of a Class 4 and Class 6 card is not much. But is this a "reputable" shop should do to its customers? Is it going to be another SLS shop which I will always avoid?

I only know that my next Canon 5D Mark III (or whatever name) will not be from Alan Photos anymore. There are other reputable shops around.

    Ouch.

I must say the S100 leather case has this odd bulge over the lens area though...

I stop going AP after they quote me a higher price than normal, it's only after some bargaining I get the 'normal' deal. Don't like their attitude also. I prefer shops to give 1 price for all.

I notice their SLS shop seem quiet now, many times I walk pass it's empty especially after renovation. Used to be very crowded.

Funan is the 'camera SLS' with TK foto and SLR revolution, cathay across the road and some accessories shops like sgcamerastore and benro next door.

Sometime we can only blame ourselves. We always want the cheapest price and forgo good service. I also kanan from one of the shop in Funan. Tot I checked my goods and end up they throw in the wrong filter when they packed. Make a extra trip down to swap the filter but they denial any wrong doing and I am stuck with inferior filter. Really must open eyes wide wide when buying from shops in Funan and Sim Lim

That explains alot. My funan purchase of my old point & shoot ended up with a nylon net type case for my camera. I had to go online to get the leather pouch from canon for it.

I haven't got a clue on the SDcard.

    Recommendation from Canon Redemption Centre

Just some updates about my original post on 20th Feb.

I phoned the Canon Redemption Centre. The guy suggested that next time, I could insist to collect the free gifts from Canon Redemption Centre directly, instead of getting from the shop. It is a bit troublesome, but at least you won't be cheated.

Of course the best is to vote with your wallet, and avoid such "black shops".
