Deep Silver–the publisher behind the critically acclaimed Dead Island series–has just announced a new chapter in the grisly zombie-slaying franchise is currently in development, and will be released as a free-to-play title via PC.
Dead Island: Epidemic makes use of ZOMBA (Zombie Online Multiplayer Battle Arena) game mechanics, wherein gamers across the world join up in teams of three to survive the post-apocalyptic zombie outbreak while battling each other for vital resources–possibly weapons, ammo and other survival-based supplies.
While the press release was your basic announcement and no in-depth gameplay elements or screenshots were revealed, Deep Silver promises that the upcoming ZOMBA will mirror the traditional horror-infused action that are incorporated within the series as a whole.
It will be interesting to see if a new array of characters will be introduced for Dead Island: Epidemic, along with how the story arc tethers our survivors to their desolate surroundings.

Additionally I’m quite anticipating the chance to work against other players while slashing marauding undead–as we all know from shows like The Walking Dead that when humans are pushed to their limits they can become even more dangerous than the zombies.
Oh and let’s not forget the insane arsenal which the Dead Island franchise is well-known for; we’ll likely see dastardly home-made tools of destruction like electrified spike-bats wound with barbed wire as well as a host of other deviously crafted weaponry.
The concept of applying the ZOMBA mechanics to a Dead Island title has quite a bit of potential, and Deep Silver will be showcasing more info–hopefully including a reveal teaser with some in-game footage, character bios, screenshots, etc.–at Gamescom later this month.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated once more information comes to light, and for more info please visit the game’s official website as well as Twitter and Facebook.
