my Swans D1080 Desktop speaker sounds better with a sweeter staging

After advise for fellow forum mates and a DIY stand, my Swans D1080 sounds better with a sweeter staging and crisper highs

Any suggestion to improve the performance even more?

    Blu-tack.

But honestly, Swans have such terrible sounding tweets, not worth tweaking them.

Hey 9VARZ....how about changing the DAC and cables?

    Will it help the TS?

ideally you've bottleneck @ your speakers, not worth changing the DACs for that level of speakers.

Not as big as changing speakers outright.

The new baseline for actives/powered boxes really should be at the Fostex PM-series of mini-monitors.

Relink please. It's true about the bottleneck, changed to iDAC and my h4s struggle to reproduce the same qualities heard on my headphones and in-ears. Can't wait to get the iCAN now.

    In a way yes.

What we are trying to say is that the H4 are rather low in ability to the extent that an entry level DAC will drive them to the peak of their performance.

therefore, changing the DACs and wires will not produce further significant improvements to the sound.

Hence, moving forward, a speaker upgrade is the best option. Upgrade the speakers first and only then will DAC upgrades yield significant improvements.

    Hi Cheapsupps,

Disclaimer: I would still consider myself as a newbie to audio

After my Focal XS Book spoilt, the only near-field desktop speaker I've tried was Adam Audio, specifically, the Adam Audio Artist 5 Speakers.

I stopped at the Adam Artist 5 speakers because I was too impressed by their Treble and Middle signature yeah.

I know a lot of bros were recommending to me to try:

    - Yamaha (ask Asuran on VRZ),
    - Aktimate (try asking alamakazam about this)
    - Genelac

PS: At office now so will only be able to discuss more in depth tonight! Sorry!

Wow I'm a bit surprised by the comments on the Swan H4, always thought they were pretty well-regarded budget speakers.

I'm using the H5s for my bedroom setup and like them quite a lot, more so than the Aktimates or similar-sized Pro Audio monitors from Adam, KRK etc. In fact, they're the most musical active monitors I've heard under $1k (very colored and warm-sounding though). Imho they're good enough to warrant getting a power conditioner/filter which improves bass impact and PRaT especially.

The PM0.X-series and the PM1 (discontinued). Those are already very good.

Agree that the ?41-series look very interesting. But I highly suspect that they would be well in the $700 to $1500 region, which opens up to a lot more competition if you also consider 2-way designs that are already just as, or more than, capable in handling the mids and lows.
