I do think intel NICs are much better than broadcom if you are using linux OS.

Hmmm this ESXI is quite picky on the hardware. Tried to install to IBM Server System X3105 with AMD Opteron Dualcore and always failed.
So now using Xenserver. So far so good, not so picky anymore.

ESXi will allow you to double your virtual ram at ESX level, ie, 4GB physical = 8GB virtual.
ESX has pretty good intelligence when it comes to allocating what the VMs actually need.
Vmware's product is more mature.
And my office is using the full blown ESX server, need to bring up another for POC.
